With this SEO guide on how to write articles for a blog , I want to provide some useful tips for writing quality content that is also appreciated by search engines such as Google and Bing. The blog is a very useful web marketing tool, but obviously it is hosted within a website which must in turn be optimized in SEO. If your site is built with WordPress you can read  SEO Guide for WordPress , and if it is not, you can still use the same optimization principles as they apply to any other CMS (PrestaShop, OpenCart, Joomla …).

In this article, however, I want to focus on SEO optimization of articles , or all the contents that are most frequently written and posted in blogs and news sections. Before starting with SEO tips, however, I want to remind you of the first golden rule of Content Marketing:

When you write textual content for your blog you don’t have to worry about how Google will read it, because your goal is to inform your users with articles that are truly an added value for them. So what you write is much more important than how you write it . Most often you may come across the term SEO Copywriting which can be misleading. The job of the Web copywriter is to write powerful texts, rich in information and details, capable of persuading Web users towards certain services, products or ideas. SEO is not an end in itself of this work, but is a quality, a strategic and organized capacity of the editor in knowingoptimize the words and the whole layout of the article in favor of search engines .

My aim today is not to teach you how to write, but to give you some SEO tips on how to optimize your text (and the whole article) to make the most of your editorial efforts. These tips apply regardless of the CMS you use, so use WordPress, Joomla, PrestaShop, OpenCart or the CMS you prefer.

Going back to keywords, my advice is to focus an article on a specific keyword . For example, if I want to write an article on how to ” optimize images with WordPress” (this is the key word), then I will concentrate all the text on this topic. If I had in mind to also write an article on ” how to use Photoshop for images” , then that will be a second article. I am not saying anything secret, on the contrary, the clearest example is the Salvatore Aranzulla website (which you certainly know) that “breaks down” each advice / topic into a single article.

Google Keyword Planner

The Keyword Planner is the powerful search and analysis tool dedicated to the keywords of the famous Google Ads (ex Google AdWords). Although it was designed for Pay Per Click campaigns, it is also an effective solution for those who want more information on SEO searches.

Neil Patel Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest is a historical platform for keyword research, but since Neil Patel made it Ubersuggest 2.0 , things have improved a lot. The method I have always preferred for the search for KW is the manual one, i.e. through the use of Ubersuggest is a suggestive scraper , that is, it takes all the variants of a given keyword directly from the search engine. Basically it does much longer manual work in seconds.

Generally we speak of the public, niche, audience, target, or  buyer person …, but in essence it is necessary to understand and know the needs, desires and attitudes of people who may potentially be interested in the content we are creating in the blog.

Other important elements for users (and therefore for SEO)

If you have read this article carefully, you understand that there is no absolute rule on how an article should be written for a blog. However, there are guidelines that can help you go the right way to successfully complete the writing of an effective article. Keeping in mind what has been said so far in this article and never forgetting that it is necessary to write for users (human beings) and optimize for search engines (software) , I would like to share my guidelines on how to write an article for your blog .

I state (and I remind you) that to write a successful article you must :

  • know the topic well;
  • if you don’t know it, you need to deepen it;
  • know the principles of Inbound Marketing

To help you deepen this last item, I would like to point out my guide on Web marketing that you can read and download for free from my website. There is also a section dedicated to SEO in which I deepen some important issues. Among these, the use of LSI keywords (basically synonyms and related words) and longtail keywords (long tail keywords) certainly deserves specific attention .

The Latent Semantic Indexing terms

The Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) are “groupings of words” that search engines use to find out how users search the Web. These groups of terms are used to express concepts , and systems such as Google and Bing identify them dynamically through their algorithm, to better define the related semantic field and associations with other groups of words (for example through synonyms).

Long-tail keywords

The long tail keywords are instead compound keywords, more specific and less competitive. By expanding the discussion we can call them search terms , or keywords that are actually used by users for their searches on the Web (while keywords are more than abstractions).

To give a practical example :

  • Keyword ( absurd and not useful): “hotel”
  • Key word (sensible, but not very useful and very competitive): “4-star hotel”.
  • Search term (useful): “4 star hotel in padova”.
  • Long-term search term (very useful and with targeted competition): “4-star hotel with swimming pool in Padua”.

How to write an SEO article for the blog

Here are finally guidelines for writing an SEO article for the blog . As already mentioned, the possibilities are really many, so I will show you some general solutions, which with the experience you will gain over time you can expand and improve.

How many words should I write?

There is no typical length , but there is the length you need to write an original, informative and persuasive text for your users. If you want a number, start with articles of around 1000 words .

How many keywords do I insert in the text?

Personally I prefer articles that focus on a topic , consequently it aims to build all the text around a keyword (obviously supported by LSI as synonyms and related words).

So just one keyword: but how many times do I repeat it in the text?

The dispute over keywords density is perhaps the oldest in SEO. Here too there is no rule, but I like to manage the amount of keywords in this way:

  • one in the title of the article (as far left as possible);
  • one in the first 160 words of the article;
  • one (more or less) in the middle of the article;
  • one at the end of the article;
  • one in one of the H2 titles of the article;
  • one in the name of an image file (and in the alt tag);
  • one in the meta title;
  • one in the meta description;
  • one in the url (short version).

H2 titles? What are?

To facilitate the reading of the text, you should divide it into paragraphs . When the paragraphs introduce a new section of the topic, I suggest you to use the titles that will have the HTML H2 setting. Use what you need, without overdoing it (but over 1000 words at least a couple), and only in one of these uses the main keyword (look at the structure of this article to better understand what I mean by paragraphs and titles).

Use bulleted or numbered lists

If your text requires lists, then you should use lists (a bit like you would in Word) because they facilitate understanding of the text.

Use the images

Images have a visual impact 8 times more incisive than words , so it is important to use them in the text. There is no perfect quantity, because it depends on the context. If you want an indication to leave, enter one every 300 words.

Remember that images must be optimized before they are included in the article , so here are some useful tips:

  • If the original image is for example 2480 × 1920, but you need 800 × 600 px, optimize it before uploading it to the site (for example with a photo editing program).
  • The images must be “light” in terms of KB. Therefore 50/70 Kb for the “standard” ones and 100/140 Kb for the full screen ones.
  • Always use JPG format, and PNG only when you need transparencies.
  • Rename the file with a name that represents the image. For example: if you have the image of a Logitech 9000 mouse, the file could be called “mouse-logitech-9000.jpg” (and not “m9000.jpg”).
  • Use the image alt tag, entering the same name as the image file.

Use external and internal links

In the text you can insert internal links (towards pages of your site) and / or external (towards other sites, preferably important and authoritative). In your text you will probably refer to other topics, which may have already been covered by you, or have an external destination. To give you an example if you don’t know who Seth Godin is, I invite you to read my article on his Purple Cow (this is an example of an internal link), but if you want to learn more about his way of doing marketing, I recommend you visit his personal website (this is an example of an external link).

The links expand the information for your users , improving the quality of your article. Insert a couple if relevant and even better if towards authoritative sites (eg Wikipedia).

Writing style

Personally, I prefer an informal professional style , which is what I am also using for this article. I like that the article gives “you” to the reader, but at the same time enriches his reading with in-depth topics in an original and clear (professional) way. To emphasize some key concepts you could use bold exactly like I’m doing in this text too.

Remember that people are always in a hurry on the Web, and therefore in your article you must already say how you think in the first three lines . If you then catch the reader’s attention, you will develop your “semantic path” in the text.

Use meta information

The meta title and meta description are two technical settings that you can assign to your article. Their purpose is to optimize the snippet of the article itself in the search engine SERP . In the image below you can see the snippet (highlighted by the red box) of one of my articles in the ranking of search results (SERP) in Google.

From this point of view, if you use WordPress, the Yoast SEO plugin  will greatly facilitate the work of inserting this information in the article, making it easier for you to fill it out.

Optimize the url of the article

As you can see the url of this article is “guide-seo-blog” and is the light version of the title of the article itself: “SEO guide on how to write an article in your blog”. Personally, I embrace the trend of short and concise urls, because I think it is a better way to optimize all the urls of the site itself.

Be creative with the title of the article

As said the title of the article should contain (better if starting) the main keyword. But that’s not the only way to optimize the main title of all your work. You have to be creative and use numbers and adjectives to “season” the title. Look at these examples (on the keyword ” weight loss tips “):

  • Weight loss tips
  • 10 tips for weight loss
  • 10 Super Tips For Weight Loss
  • 10 Super Tips To Lose Weight Fast
  • 10 Super Tips To Lose Weight Fast And Effortlessly

Which do you think is the most incisive? I think you also consider the last title to be the most persuasive one, precisely because it is enriched with an initial number (“5 ways to make grandma’s cake”; “3 solutions against mosquitoes” …) which better identifies the reader in the head value of the content it will read. Another system is to contextualize with the date the title of the article: “Definitive guide to lose weight without effort [2018 edition]” …).

What I would like you to understand is that the title is important, because it is the first thing that a user reads and therefore has the arduous task of creating the premises that will push (or not push) the user to continue reading.

Enter the author of the article

In the period in which bloggers and influencers depopulate, specifying who the author of the article is (as I also do at the bottom of this post) allows you to create a deeper connection between author and reader. The goal is always to push users to become active followers and promoters of their content (e.g. by sharing them in their social channels).

Enter an index of the article

Inserting a summary ( tables of contents ) is not everyone’s liking, but it can be very useful and is also appreciated by search engines. Creating a clickable index at the top of the article facilitates user navigation, but must be done very well and in a simple way, especially favoring the UX experience. Generally it can be done “by hand” with anchors, or you can use a plugin such as Easy Tables of Contents (free) or Fixed TOC (for a fee).

Use the date of the last update

Nobody likes to read old articles, even if they were interesting in their time. For this reason, I recommend replacing the publication date of the article with the date of the last update (as is also the case in this post).
